Resumo: In this paper, we rethink an old controversy involving the preffixation in Portuguese: if this process aligns the suffixation and, therefore, differs from the compounding, or is affiliated to the compounding, distinguishing itself from suffixation. In the paper, we show that the preffixation is not uniform and, therefore, is far from being considered globally compounding or derivation. We believe, following Nunes (2009: 291), “that the individuality of the prefixes forces us to consider this process heterogeneous and we believe the different behavior of each prefix allows the classification of the process as derivation or compounding”. This vagueness indicates that a categorization based on prototypes is more appropriate for the description of word formation in Portuguese.

This vagueness indicates that a categorization based on prototypes is more appropriate for the description of word formation in Portuguese.Neste texto, repensamos uma antiga polêmica envolvendo a prefixação em português: se esse processo alinha-se à sufixação e, com isso, diferencia-se da composição, ou, na verdade, filiase à composição, distinguindo-se da sufixação. Ao longo do artigo, mostramos que a prefixação não constitui processo uniforme e, por isso mesmo, está longe de ser globalmente considerada composição ou derivação. Como Nunes (2009: 291), acreditamos que “a individualidade dos elementos prefixais nos obriga a considerar a prefixação como um processo heterogéneo e que é o comportamento diferenciado de cada elemento prefixal que permite a classificação da prefixação enquanto processo derivacional ou enquanto processo composicional de formação de palavras”.
