Resumo: Ler ou estudar Saussure costuma demandar uma atitude preconcebida. Há ideias e conceitos do mestre suíço que se disseminaram como ícones nos estudos da linguística contemporânea. Este artigo objetiva focalizar um assunto recorrente na vivência linguística, mas pouco associado ao Curso de Linguística Geral (1975). Pretende-se, a partir dos escritos de Saussure, apresentar considerações de conceituados estudiosos dos fenômenos da linguagem, para avivar e resgatar a relevância da etimologia popular no rol dos recursos da língua disponíveis para pesquisa e análise. Selecionaram- se, além de exemplos da evolução do fenômeno em questão em línguas estrangeiras, material em obra de ficção em língua portuguesa.

There are ideas and concepts of the Swiss master that spread as icons in the studies of contemporary linguistics. This article aims at focusing on a recurring theme in linguistic experience but seldom associated with the Curso de Linguística Geral (1975). From Saussure´s writings, it is intended to present considerations of renowned scholars who deal with language phenomena, in order to revive and rescue the relevance of popular etymology on the list of language resources that are available for research and analysis.
