Resumo: | Self-evaluative emotions emerge from social relationships and from a positive or negative self-evaluation, in specific situations, that influence the development of the self. Based on these characteristics, guilty, shame and pride are self-evaluative emotions, the two first are related to a negative self-evaluation and the latter to a positive one. As they are emotions that emerge from relationships, the individual can feel them from a negative or positive evaluation that a person can make of him or her. The main function of emotions is to assist the individual in adapting and surviving. Emotions trigger cognitive activities for an action or an appropriate behavior to a situation or a meaningful event. Therefore, all the emotions are positive in relation to their primary function to the human specie with consequences for the survival. Nevertheless, the experience of certain emotions, under specific situations, fosters negative feelings and thoughts. In this sense, emotions that lead to positive emotional experiences foster pleasant feelings and thoughts, which one may attribute positive meaning to oneself and to the experienced situation, whereas negative emotional experiences may give negative meanings to the person and to the event. Emotions are relevant to subjectivity. We understand that the experience of self-evaluative emotions may influence the development of the self, in more or less intense degrees, depending on the individual and social interpretation of the self-evaluative experience. In the modern western culture, the imperative of success and accomplishment prevails. In this sense, the individual sees himself/herself in a constant self-evaluation, as a way of perceiving himself/herself as failing or achieving. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the influence of self-evaluative emotions in the development of the self in the adolescence. This phase was chosen as it is the moment in which the adolescent increases his/her cognitive, psychological, physical, emotional and social functions and abilities with which new accomplishments and projects are thought to the future. Therefore, experiences of success and failure can become more present in the life of the adolescent. Consequently, emotions of guilty, shame and pride may be more present, implicating in new meanings to the self. By using a qualitative methodology, 12 teenagers participate in this study, six boys and six girls, from 15 to 19 years old, residents of the city of Rio de Janeiro, were interviewed according to a script. The interviews were transcribed and was adopted a Content Analysis. As a whole, the adolescents point to an influence of the self-evaluative emotions to the development of the self. The adolescents that has some achievement when talking about themselves are, predominantly, are more secure and positive. The adolescents who do not have any accomplishment so far and still rely on parental support to regulate their negative emotional experience have predominantly a positive narrative of themselves. The adolescents, who have a family environment that indicates fragile relationships, show a narrative about themselves, predominantly, negative. Consequently, we understand that the parental attachment in the adolescence is relevant to the adolescents, as it helps in the regulation of positive and negative emotional experiences. Based on this study, we conclude that self-evaluative emotions influence the development of adolescent self and a safe and stable family environment lead to the regulation of these emotions fostering the development of a healthy self |

Based on this study, we conclude that self-evaluative emotions influence the development of adolescent self and a safe and stable family environment lead to the regulation of these emotions fostering the development of a healthy selfAs emoções autoavaliadoras emergem a partir das relações sociais e da autoavaliação positiva ou negativa, em situações específicas, que influenciam o desenvolvimento do self. Com base neste estudo, concluímos que as emoções autoavaliadoras influenciam no desenvolvimento do self adolescente e um ambiente familiar seguro e estável permite que estas emoções sejam reguladas, propiciando o desenvolvimento saudável do selfSubmitted by Boris Flegr (boris@uerj.br) on 2021-01-07T18:42:27Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissert_ Ana Paula Faria.pdf: 2080439 bytes, checksum: e71972c43db9bf5ff8041ba022e9a719 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2021-01-07T18:42:27Z (GMT).
