This thesis deals with the process of transition to democracy in Angola. The study period covers from the country's independence in 1975 to the year 2012, with the completion of the third general elections. For that purpose, we have established three chronological stages: (1) from 1975, with the independence of Angola and the inauguration of the First Republic, to the year 1991, with the advent of multiparty politics and the Second Republic; (2) from the Second Republic, in 1991, to the year 2010, with the enactment of the constitution known as the atypical and the establishment of the Third Republic, (3) and from the Third Republic, in 2010, to the election campaign of 2012. Each of these periods is studied following the analysis of political institutions that characterize democracy. We have also identified and examined the reasons behind the triggering of the transition (why?), the way in which the transition was triggered (how?), the actors involved in the transitional process (who?), as well as the stage of democratization in Angola. The thesis, therefore, is developed taking into account the existing bibliographic production on the subject and the empirical data collected through in - depth interviews both with actors involved in the transition process and ordinary citizens.
