Resumo: The present work addresses the issue of reading and reading comprehension of seventh-year secondary school students. A longitudinal study was carried out, based on theoretical studies by Morais and Dehaene, as well as Kato, Solé and Marcuschi 's researches and arguments on reading and reading comprehension. The objective was to investigate the level of reading comprehension of written texts and to develop strategies that could contribute to the improvement of such understanding. Two Cloze tests were applied at two different times of the research. The study suggests a significant increase in reading comprehension of the students in the second test, applied after the intervention actions, indicating a positive impact of pedagogical actions directed to the development of reading and reading strategies.

Foi feito um estudo longitudinal, tendo como base teórica os estudos de Morais e de Dehaene, além das pesquisas e considerações de Kato, Solé e Marcuschi sobre estratégias de leitura e compreensão em leitura. O objetivo foi investigar o nível de compreensão dos alunos em leitura de textos escritos e elaborar estratégias que pudessem contribuir para o aprimoramento dessa compreensão. Foram aplicados dois testes de Cloze, além de outros cinco testes durante a intervenção, em dois momentos diferentes da pesquisa.
