Female adolescence is marked by many challenges as a result of numerous changes that occur in the adolescent s life. Puberty accentuates the biological differences between the sexes, as well as, sociocultural demands and expectations. The augmentation of breasts and hips experienced by the adolescent girls evokes new feelings and sensations. The major issues that teenage girls deal with, in middle adolescence, are related to handling sexuality, making moral decisions, developing new relationships with peers, balancing autonomy and accountability. The way the adolescent will live these changes is shaped by her personal characteristics, beliefs and practices that reflect her cultural context. In the western culture, the autonomy development related to the family is a major issue in adolescence. Despite of social transformations, the family continues to play an essential role in the individual formation with its caring, support and affection mission. In the family context, parents communicate their attitude towards their children through the parental style, fostering an emotional climate in which their parental practices are expressed. Studies dedicated to the parent-children relationship highlight the importance of the father for the family dynamic and emotional climate and suggest that the gender of the parent may influence the way he relates to his daughter. Therefore, the aim of this study unfolds on two moments. The first one is to promote a reflection based on a literature review covering this topic. The second is to investigate the relationship between the perceived paternal parenting style and the teenage daughter s autonomy development. Hence a quantitative method was applied and scales of autonomy, interdependence, relational-autonomy and parental styles were used. Fifty female adolescents took part in the research. They were between the ages of 14-16, from intact families and resided in Rio de Janeiro. The results show a relationship between the autonomy and the perceived paternal parenting style. The more the adolescents perceived their parents as authoritative, higher were their scores in relational-autonomy and lower in autonomy. As a whole, the adolescents in this research showed a tendency toward relational-autonomy and perceiving their fathers with an authoritative parental style. Based on these results, we conclude that the way adolescents perceived their fathers will be related to how they develop their autonomy, indicating the importance for more research investigating the father-daughter relationship in adolescence in a Brazilian context.
