This research aims to analyze and investigate how children from the 5th grade of Elementary School build the concept of Numbering having as a starting point the Solving of Mathematical Problems based on the literary work of Malba Tahan “The Man who Counted”. It addresses the relevance of the link between Literature and Mathematics and the possible reinterpretations of this experience for the social, intellectual and personal development of students. It presents a brief history of the emergence of numbers and writing in disparate societies and their importance to the world. It presents a brief history of the legacy of the Work and of the Malbatahanica pedagogy. The theoretical contributions that support the investigation are anchored in the theories of George Pólya and Guy Brousseau. This is an action-research in which the research universe consisted of 14 students from a private school in São João de Meriti – RJ. Through the analyzes it was possible to verify that the literary practice in the classroom is an instrument that favors the mathematical learning, however the Problem Solving Methodology is not limited to an adequate interpretation of texts.
