Resumo: This dissertation exposes the results of a comparative study about the reports of two European travellers from different historical moments, geographical situations and socio-cultural stratifications: Hans Staden – the true history of his captivity, by Hans Staden and Sad Tropics, by Claude Lévi-Strauss. Based on an assumption of the relevance such narratives receive in Brazilian Studies, the investigation develops around the interest of the researcher in certain aspects of exotic fictionalizations of the imaginary territory named “Brazil”, engendered in both reports (places, times and beings involved in the elaboration of the place depicted by the historical, literary and ethnographic fictions of travel stories). However, given the emphatic representations of the first-person narrators evidenced in these texts, the research expands its scope in order to include the examination of the very figures that a German adventurer co-contemporary with the Age of Discovery, and a French ethnographer of the 20th century make of themselves, both in respect to the circumstances of history and to the peculiar contexts of the stories of their displacement and permanence in Brazil. Thus, in the light of the theoretical reflections of W. Iser and K. Stierle, those of Z. Ziebell, F. Cristóvão and Duffy & Metcalf, as well as those of T. Todorov, W. Benjamin, P. Lejeune and P. Ricouer, the researcher criticizes certain images of the New World and of the American that explain them not according to the terms of those encountered cultures, but based on logics, judgments and attitudes inherent to western ethnocentrism, as a result of the perplexity of narrators facing the challenge of the untranslatable difference of the other in terms of writing. The present work also seeks to register the possible assimilation of such referentiality, as a social phenomenon that implies the objects themselves in the representations elaborated by the reports, as an intrinsic characteristic of the Brazilian cultural field.

The present work also seeks to register the possible assimilation of such referentiality, as a social phenomenon that implies the objects themselves in the representations elaborated by the reports, as an intrinsic characteristic of the Brazilian cultural field. Submitted by Eliane CEH/B (liliprata2000@gmail.com) on 2023-04-11T15:10:36Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao - Fernando Arantes Ferrao - 2020 - Completa.pdf: 2692212 bytes, checksum: 2d222045c2b51811a236335e41261449 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2023-04-11T15:10:36Z (GMT).
