The purpose of this study is to examine the Customs in Rio de Janeiro in the second half of the eighteenth century. For this, we investigate the Customs officials and their royal offices that were given to them as a favour and privilege by the Crown, related to institutional spaces. We also highlight the taxes charged by the tenants, especially the ? Dizima da Alfândega? (a ten percent tax over the price of the products entering the county through the Customs), a tribute that has reflected the port economy, the commercial routes of the South Atlantic and the donation as subsidies given and imposed upon businessman from Lisbon and Rio. And also, it is possible to see the businessman as individuals that served Your Majesty in Customs functions, for they had mercantile experience. Not only this, but having this function would enable material accumulation. By this mean, we can define the Customs as an economical space, once it is a port of arrival and departure of goods to supply the city of Rio de Janeiro, the most important distributor of products in the eighteenth century; and as a political space, for there were man connected to commercial activities in the Chamber and social space, in which the social relations would facilitate material accumulation.
