The geography between materiality and immateriality

Resumo: During the history of geographic thought, antagonisms proved to be powerful enough to stimulate the emergence of very different mainstreams of thought and methods of geographical analysis: on the one hand, objectivity versus subjectivity; on the other, materiality versus immateriality. This article presents how these antagonisms participate in the geographic analysis, reflecting on the limitations of their extreme manifestations, as a way to the objective of this theoretical reflection: the suggestion of an intermediate position in the midst of this theoretical effort, inspired by the thought of Augustin Berque about mediation of materiality and immateriality and the word geograms. As a methodological strategy, the article starts from the discussions that involved materialities and immaterialities in the period of reaction to the flourishing of neopositivism in the 1950s. The manifestations of objectivity and subjectivity in geographical research are also addressed, which support to think about the materiality and immateriality of the elements of the landscape and the concepts appropriated by geography. The metaphor landscape-as-an-text is used as a reflection strategy, which served as an instrument of reflection on the problems arising from the use of extreme forms of immateriality. Finally, it highlights the most practical effects of the disagreement between materiality and immateriality, using the categories race and culture as reflective tools.

Este artí­culo presenta como estos antagonismos participan en el análisis geográfico, reflexionando acerca de las limitaciones de sus manifestaciones extremas, como un camino hasta el objetivo de esta reflexión teórica: la sugerencia de una posición intermedia en medio de este embrollo teórico, inspirado en el pensamiento de Augustin Berque sobre mediación de materialidad e inmaterialidad consagrada en geogramas de neologismo. Como estrategia metodológica, el texto del artí­culo parte de las grandes discusiones que involucraron materialidades e inmaterialidades en el perí­odo de reacción al florecimiento del neopositivismo en la década de 1950. También, se abordan las manifestaciones de objetividad y subjetividad en la investigación geográfica, pensar en la materialidad e inmaterialidad de los elementos del paisaje y los conceptos apropiados por la Geografí­a. La metáfora del paisaje como texto es utilizada como estrategia de reflexión, que sirvió como instrumento de reflexión acerca de los problemas derivados del uso de formas extremas de inmaterialidad. Finalmente, resalta los efectos más prácticos del desacuerdo entre materialidad e inmaterialidad, utilizando las categorí­as raza y cultura como instrumentos reflexivos.Durante a história do pensamento geográfico, antagonismos mostraram-se poderosos o suficiente para estimular o surgimento de correntes do pensamento e métodos de análise geográfica bastante distintos: de um lado, a objetividade versus a subjetividade; de outro, a materialidade versus imaterialidade. Este artigo apresenta como estes antagonismos participam da análise geográfica, refletindo sobre as limitações de suas manifestações extremadas, como um caminho para o objetivo desta reflexão teórica: a sugestão de uma posição intermediária em meio a este imbróglio teórico, inspirados no pensamento de Augustin Berque acerca da mediação da materialidade e imaterialidade consagrada no neologismo geogramas. Como uma estratégia metodológica, o texto do artigo parte das grandes discussões que envolveram materialidades e imaterialidades no perí­odo da reação ao florescimento do neopositivismo da década de 1950. É abordado, também, as manifestações da objetividade e da subjetividade na pesquisa geográfica, que dão suporte para pensarmos na materialidade e imaterialidade dos elementos da paisagem e nos conceitos apropriados pela geografia. É utilizado como estratégia de reflexão a metáfora da paisagem como texto, que serviu como um instrumento de reflexão sobre os problemas advindos da utilização de formas extremadas de imaterialidade. Por fim, destaca os efeitos mais práticos do desacordo entre a materialidade e a imaterialidade, utilizando as categorias raça e cultura como instrumentos reflexivos.
