Resumo: This paper, has an epistemological approach, investigates the theoretical tools used to analyze the relationship between culture and communication, following two different paths. First, it stresses the importance of fine analysis that leave behind major generalizations in favor of a close apprehension of the everyday life; on the other hand, the paper discusses several ways in which the materiality of media must be considered in order to allow a comprehension of the social effects of the same media.

El eje central de argumentación es doble: por un lado, se destaca la importancia de análisis finos que abandonen el campo de las grandes generalizaciones explicativas a favor de un abordaje serrado de lo cotidiano; por otra, se discuten diversas modalidades en las que puede considerarse la materialidad de los medios de comunicación. La materialidad ciertamente es importante para una efectiva comprensión de la presencia social de estos medios.O presente texto tem um caráter, sobretudo, epistemológico e seu horizonte maior é constituído por uma investigação acerca dos modos de teorização de que nos servimos para pensar as relações entre comunicação e cultura. O eixo central de argumentação é duplo: por um lado, destaca-se a importância de análises finas que abandonem o campo das grandes generalizações explicativas em favor de uma abordagem serrada do cotidiano; por outro, são discutidas diversas modalidades em que a materialidade dos meios de comunicação pode ser considerada.
