The lack of infrastructure and the lack of investments in basic sanitation directly interfere with the quality of life and health of the population, causing the incidence of waterborne diseases. This is due to the lack of collection and treatment of sewage, adduction of pipes to capture water, lack of water treatment and solid waste management compatible with the needs; directly affecting public health. Thus, this study aims to highlight the importance of the sanitary sewage system in the municipality of São José da Tapera, located in the state of Alagoas and its relationship with public health. For this, it became necessary to study the possible diseases caused by the lack of adequate sanitation in the municipality. Thus, the area of study and diagnosis of the current situation of the municipality was identified, where a large part of the population uses the public health service. The methodology of this research was based on governmental statistics, books and published works. The data collection for the accomplishment of this work was through questionnaires with the population, including the servants of the health, city hall and public hospital. The study of the analysis of the data obtained in the research allows an understanding about basic sanitation in the municipality.
