Necessidades de inglês para fins específicos - IFE para os profissionais de radiofonia na aviação civil: um estudo de caso no Amazonas

With the end of the Second World War in 1945, an unified world was created and dominated by two forces – technology and commerce – which generated the demand for an international language, and this role fell to English, mainly due to the economic power of the United States in the post-war world, in which the focus of English teaching and learning were on the needs and interests of the learner (HUTCHINSON; WATERS, 1987). This importance of effective communication can be observed in civil aviation, which follows a series of standards, which according to the National Civil Aviation Agency - ANAC (2021), it is up to ICAO to develop standards and recommended practices, known as SARPs (Standard and Recommended Practices), which guide the actions of civil aviation authorities around the world. Therefore, this TCC deals with English for Specific Purposes - ESP and the training of professionals who use radio in civil aviation. Thus, this work had as a general objective to identify the English needs of professionals who work in civil aviation radiophony in Amazonas and as a specific objective to identify the linguistic difficulties faced by these professionals. The theoretical framework was based on Bocorny (2011), Hutchinson and Waters (1987), Leffa (2006), Monteiro (2009), Ramos (2008), among others. The research was based on a qualitative approach (CELANI, 2005; LEFFA, 2006) and was developed through a case study according to Leffa (2006), Feagin, Orum and Sjoberg (1991) and Stake (2007). The research was carried out in the Air Navigation Sector of Airport B (inland of Amazonas) and in the Control Tower of Eduardo Gomes Airport, in Manaus (AM). The research instruments used were a Profile and Investigative Questionnaire. The participants were six civil servants working in these locations, three at Airport B and three in Manaus (AM). Data were analyzed in the light of Content Analysis by Bardin (2016) and Chizzotti (2006). The results pointed out as needs of CTAs and OEAs that work in radiophony in relation to English, that they need a better base of General English and refresher courses that cover General English and English for Specific Purposes - ESP for Aviation, because, both are essential in situations such as emergencies. With this work, we hope to contribute to the field of training professionals who work in civil aviation radio, with regard to teaching and learning English.
