Technological Prospecting of the Nutraceutical Sector in Brazil and Worldwide

Resumo: The market for nutraceuticals, products that provide health benefits, has shown an exponential annual growth, being an alternative to pharmaceutical products and their high levels of synthetic ingredients. To analyze the evolution of nutraceutical technology, both in Brazil as in the world, the study used the Orbit Intelligence database, applying the term nutraceutic* as a keyword, in the period between 2000 and 2020. Worldwide, there were 2430 deposits of patents, mainly directed to the pharmaceutical sector. In Brazil, 408 applications were found, with innovations focused at both the health and food sectors. The analysis of the patents indicated an average age of 9 years for the portfolios and a high interest in the developed technology. This, together with the maximum period of 20 years until the patent becomes public domain, indicates the use of other forms of protection as a strategy to stimulate the dynamics of the nutraceutical industry and offer more innovative products.

Para analisar a evolução da tecnologia de nutracêuticos, tanto no Brasil quanto no mundo, este estudo utilizou a base de dados Orbit Intelligence, empregando o termo nutraceutic* como palavra-chave, no período entre 2000 e 2020. No âmbito mundial, foram 2.430 depósitos de patentes, voltados, principalmente, para o setor farmacêutico. No Brasil, foram registrados 408 pedidos, com inovações direcionadas tanto ao setor de saúde quanto ao setor alimentício. A análise das patentes apontou uma idade média de nove anos dos portfólios e um elevado interesse na tecnologia desenvolvida.
