Effects of Brazilian Accession to the Madrid Protocol Related to Trademark Applications

In october 02,2019, the Madrid Protocol, which regulates the international system of Trademark Registration, came into force in Brazil. This article aims to analyze how the evolution of registration requests made using the Protocol involving Brazil has been taking place. The approach was exploratory and descriptive. Four searches were carried out on the WIPO website: two with Brazil as the country of origin, two as the designated country, using two search periods: from 10/02/2019 to 09/01/2021 and from 10/02/2021 2019 to 10/02/2022.  Among the main results, it was found that until 09/01/2021, the most used Nice Class (NCL) were 35, as well as that the largest foreign depositor and the country most designated by Brazilians was the United States. Comparing the results of the two periods: it is concluded that there has been exponentially greater use of the Madrid Protocol by foreigners in Brazil (70%) than by Brazilians abroad (33%).
