This text aims to trace a path through researches using the state of the art about the knowledge necessary for teaching both in general education and Professional and Technological Education (EPT). It is intended to dialogue with these authors, questioning if there are any particularities in this knowledge that is safe to affirm that for EPT the knowledge and challenges of teaching are different than other levels and modalities of education. Once that is done, a dialogue with Freire (1996) and Aguiar Júnior (2010) will be created, which tells, respectively, about the knowledge necessary to the teacher formation and about the challenges of the teaching practice. To articulate these objectives, interviews were made with 43 teachers of an EPT institution, guided mainly by the five teaching challenges listed by Aguiar Júnior, which are: promoting and sustaining student engagement in school tasks, reframing school contents, building an activity curriculum, establishing productive and discursive interactions with student participation and dealing with cultural diversity, motivations, rhythms and skills of students.
