Resumo: University students are a population at risk for mental disorders due to the stressors present in the academic context. The way of dealing with stressful situations is related to mental health problems. This study aims to identify the prevalence of Common Mental Disorders (CMD) and its association with sociodemographic, academic and work variables and coping strategies in a sample of 390 Brazilian university students. Data collection was performed using the Self-Reporting Questionnaire - 20 (SRQ-20), Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory (COPE) - Short Version and a sociodemographic, academic and work questionnaire. The results obtained through the Multivariate Binary Logistic Regression analysis identified a prevalence of 68.2% of CMD and female gender and the use of avoidant coping as risk variables, and the use of problem-focused coping as a protective factor. The high prevalence of CMD found suggests the need to implement psychosocial support programs for students and actions to develop coping strategies focused on the problem.
