Resumo: The article discusses the transformations of contact and intimate visits in the Federal Penitentiary System. Federal prisons were created in the mid-2000s as part of an agenda to combat criminal gangs. Visits were banned in 2017, on the grounds that they were being used for the transmission of messages and “salves”, especially after police operations and episodes of fatal violence against federal criminal enforcement agents. Through interviews with actors involved in the execution of this penitentiary policy, in addition to the analysis of norms and documents produced by DEPEN, we argue how the change in relation to visits has contributed to making federal prisons more rigorous for their population, in addition to closing even more to external social intervention.
