Resumo: This article deals with Ian McEwan’s novel, Atonement (2001), covering metafictional elements present in the work, in order to emphasize how this literary resource was translated into the cinematographic medium in the film adaptation Atonement (2007), by Joe Wright. For the metafiction approach we dealt with Hutcheon (1984), Waugh (2001) and Bernardo (2010) who indicate in what way it is possible to identify the metafiction present in the literary work. When it comes to the studies concerning film adaptation as translation this research is based on EvenZohar’s Polysystem Theory (1990), Cattrysse’s descriptive translation studies (1992), and Lefevere’s rewriting concept (2007) essential concepts when it comes to the study of cinematographic adaptation. For the analysis, it was chosen a relevant cinematographic scene for the perception of metafiction. It was also observed which cinematographic strategies were used so that such element, so relevant for the development of the narrative in the novel, was presented in the film. Throughout this research it became possible to notice that the elements which make part of the film-making have a critical role in the adaptation and preservation of literary aspects within a work of different medium, the cinematographic, but dependent on the literary one. Considering the results of the research, it is possible to affirm that, even occurring in another medium apart from the literary, as the film adaptation with its particularities, the metafiction was presented in the film.
