The purpose of this article is to analyze the series of four novels by italian writer Elena Ferrante known as neapolitan tetralogy through the literary tradition of the female Bildungsroman, a review of the literary genre Bildungsroman proposed by the feminist literary criticism in the 1970s. With this revision of the form of the novel, which privileges reflections on the relationship between the individual and society, feminist theorists and writers began to emphasize the constructions of female characters trajectories and specific feminine gender issues such as the search for financial independence, the relationship between mother and daughter, professional trajectories, among others. My hypothesis is that Ferrante in the construction of the trajectories of the main characters in his tetralogy, Elena Greco and Raffaella Cerullo, dialogues directly with this literary tradition of the female Bildungsroman precisely to consolidate his neapolitan tetralogy within this tradition contributing to the construction of a female epistemology that is capable of enabling the writing of female narratives based on female references as well.
