Resumo: Objective: tracking potentially violent behavior committed against the elderly by caregivers, with the use of the instrument Caregiver Abuse Screen/CASE. Method: Exploratory, descriptive quantitative study, carried out with 157 caregivers of elderly in Fortaleza-CE, Brazil. Data were collected at home, from January to March/2012. It was applied descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. It obtained approval from the research project Research Ethics Committee Protocol 162/11. Results: 29,9% of caregivers reached the sum of scores in CASE establishing presence or risk of violence. Items with higher percentages of positive responses were: feeling unable to do what "is really necessary for the elderly" (42,7%); difficulty in controlling the irritation/aggressiveness of the elderly (38,9%). Personal income and gender of the caregiver of the elderly showed statistically significant correlation with the risk of violence. Conclusion: potentially violent behavior measured by the sum of scores at CASE was present for a significant portion of the sample.

Método: estudo descritivo exploratório, quantitativo, desenvolvido junto a 157 cuidadores de idosos de Fortaleza-CE, Brasil. Os dados foram coletados em domicílio, de janeiro a março/2012. Empregou-se análise estatística descritiva e inferencial. Obteve-se aprovação do projeto de pesquisa Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa, Protocolo 162/11. Resultados: 29,9% dos cuidadores atingiram o somatório de escores no CASE que estabelece presença de risco de violência. Os itens com maiores percentuais de respostas afirmativas foram: sentimento de não conseguir fazer o que “é realmente necessário para o idoso” (42,7%); dificuldade de controlar a irritação/agressividade do idoso (38,9%). A renda pessoal do cuidador e sexo do idoso apresentaram correlação estatística significante com o risco de violência. Conclusão: atitudes potencialmente violentas, mensuradas pelo somatório de escores no CASE, estiveram presentes para parcela expressiva da amostra estudada.Objetivo: seguimiento del comportamiento potencialmente violento cometido contra las personas mayores por los cuidadores, con el uso del instrumento Cuidador abuso Screen/CASE. Método: estudio exploratorio, descriptivo cuantitativo, realizado con 157 cuidadores de personas mayores en Fortaleza-CE, Brasil. Los datos fueron recolectados en el país, de enero a marzo/2012. Aplicado análisis estadístico descriptivo e inferencial. Obtención de la aprobación del proyecto de investigación de Investigación Comité de Ética Protocolo 162/11. Resultados: 29,9% de los cuidadores llegaron a la suma de las puntuaciones en el caso que establecen presencia o riesgo de violencia. Los productos con un mayor porcentaje de respuestas positivas fueron: sentirse incapaz de hacer lo que "es realmente necesario para los ancianos" (42,7%); dificultad para controlar la irritación/agresividad de las personas mayores (38,9%). El ingreso personal y el género del cuidador de ancianos mostraron correlación estadísticamente significativa con el riesgo de violencia.
