Resumo: Este artigo apresenta os resultados da pesquisa que teve o objetivo de analisar a representação da velhice em King Lear, considerando as relações de poder e o conflito de geração, apresentados na organização dramática da peça. Escrita pelo dramaturgo inglês, William Shakespeare, a obra inspira várias possibilidades de análise, tanto no que se refere ao aspecto formal quanto ao temático. O estudo da categoria velhice, enfatizando a relação idade/geração, constitui uma temática que suscita uma reflexão sobre a suscetibilidade do ser humano nas relações sociais, contribuindo para ressaltar a função social da literatura, que constitui um fator de humanização. A pesquisa teve início com a leitura da peça. Depois, foram destacadas as falas das personagens sobre velhice. Então, com o apoio de textos críticos e teóricos, discutiu-se a construção da representação dessa categoria social e sua relevância na organização dramática da obra em estudo. Verificou-se que a representação da velhice, nessa obra shakespeariana, apresenta uma perspectiva predominantemente negativa, relacionada com a decadência e com a morte. A relação de poder e o conflito de gerações constituem fatores primordiais na organização da peça, gerando a tensão entre as forças antagônicas que desencadeiam o conflito dramático.

Written by the English playwright, William Shakespeare, the work inspires several possibilities of analysis, both in relation to the formal aspect and to the thematic one. The study of the old age category, emphasizing the relation age/generation, form a thematic that incites a reflection on the touchiness of the human being in the social relationships. It contributes to show the social function of the literature, which is a factor of humanization. The research began with the reading of the play. Afterwards, the speeches of the characters about the old age were selected. Then, with the support of critical and theoretical texts, the construction of the representation of that social category and its relevance in the dramatic organization of the work were discussed. It was verified that the representation of the old age, in this Shakespearian work, mainly shows a negative perspective, related to decay and to death.
