Resumo: The purpose of this article is to investigate how Carlos Lacerda appropriated discussions promoted in the context of the 1930 revolution regarding culture and politics in Brazil. More specifically, it is necessary to ask how the journalist interpreted the relationship between liberalism and democracy, in view of the space of experience demarcated by the 1937 dictatorship and the horizon of expectation offered by the “democracy of the elites”. To answer this question, I will discuss the relationship between liberalism and democracy, followed by comments on the work of Oliveira Vianna, Azevedo Amaral and Francisco Campos. Finally, I will analyze articles published by Carlos Lacerda in the Tribuna da Imprensa, between 1950 and 1955, a period that includes the second Getúlio Vargas government, two presidential elections and several questions about democratic institutions.

Más específicamente, cabe preguntarse cómo interpretó el periodista la relación entre liberalismo y democracia, teniendo en cuenta el espacio de experiencia demarcado por la dictadura de 1937 y el horizonte de expectativa que ofrecía la “democracia de las élites”. Para responder a esta pregunta, discutiré la relación entre liberalismo y democracia, seguida de comentarios sobre el trabajo de Oliveira Vianna, Azevedo Amaral y Francisco Campos. Finalmente, analizaré artículos publicados por Carlos Lacerda en Tribuna da Imprensa, entre 1950 y 1955, período que abarca el segundo gobierno de Getúlio Vargas, dos elecciones presidenciales y varios cuestionamientos a la institucionalidad democrática.O objetivo deste artigo é investigar como Carlos Lacerda se apropriou de discussões promovidas no contexto da revolução de 1930 a respeito da cultura e da política no Brasil. De modo mais específico, cumpre perguntar de que modo o jornalista interpretou a relação entre liberalismo e democracia, tendo em vista o espaço de experiência demarcado pela ditadura de 1937 e o horizonte de expectativa oferecido pela “democracia das elites”. Para responder essa questão, farei uma discussão sobre a relação entre liberalismo e democracia, seguida de comentários relativos à obra de Oliveira Vianna, Azevedo Amaral e Francisco Campos.
