Contrajunctive value of "acontece que"

This paper analyzes the linguistic micro-steps changes in “acontece que” construction, based on the theoretical assumptions of Functionalism and LCU. In evaluating texts from the 15th to the 21st centuries, the authors computed 93 occurrences in three models. The first model, normal context, presents the verb “acontecer” that predicates a subjective clause in a contrastive context, with lexical opposition; in the second model, critical context, “acontece que” focuses on the information, always preceded by a contrastive connector: “mas”, e, “agora”; model three, isolating context, presents the grammaticalization of “acontece que” which functions as a focuser and as an argumentative operator of contrast. It is observed that among the semantic values of the prototype conjunctive “mas” proposed by Neves (2011), “acontece que” presents: opposition of new (partial) information, restricting negatively A; opposition independently, and B an unexpected element; and B denying all the previous information in A.
