Resumo: | This article aims at analyzing the grammatical approach given to the parts of speech (partes orationis), by Donatus in his Ars maior (c. IV AD). We intend to evaluate which criteria are used to define, specify and illustrate the parts of speech. We claim that the grammarian uses the “semantic” criterion to define some parts of speech, and also makes use of the “morphological” – to distinguish and characterize the accidentia – , the “syntactical” – to give the functions of some parts of speech in relation to their accidentia and to other parts – and the “phonetic” – to describe examples and their pronunciation patterns. |

IV d.C.). É nossa meta avaliar quais critérios são considerados na definição, especificação e ilustração das classes de palavras nessa obra. Defendemos que Donato utiliza não somente o critério “semântico”, como também se vale dos critérios “morfológico” – para distinguir e caracterizar os accidentia –, “sintático” – para indicar o estatuto funcional das classes em relação aos accidentia e às outras classes –, e “fonológico” – para descrever os exemplos e seus padrões de pronúncia.
