Resumo: This text presents a summary of the dialectological projects that have been developed in Minas Gerais. The description of the variation of Portuguese used in this state suggests a delimitation of two or three basic dialectal areas – division which can apparently be explained through historical factors. This text aims to discuss the problems that might arise due to the attempt to explain the state dialectal division in the light of traditional History, disregarding factors such as the dynamism of time, space and social relations existing among the speakers of this language.
