Resumo: In this article, we will reassemble and interpret the notes and manuscripts of the Brazilian film historian Paulo Emílio Sales Gomes for the course The Films in the City (1966), in which he analyzes the history of Brazil in the 19th century in search of the genesis of a state of underdevelopment immanent to the physiognomy of Brazilian cinema. In the course, Paulo Emílio investigates the 19th century in search of examples to explain in the long lasting the persistence of economic, psychological, social and cultural aspects that will be decisive in his interpretation of the history of Brazilian cinema, marked by underdevelopment.
