Resumo: A theoretical article whose purpose was to present a reflection on planning of leadership succession in nursing, highlighting its conceptual bases and challenges to the creation of new leaderships in academic contexts and healthcare organizations. Two key points were defined for this discussion: “Leadership succession in nursing: the fundamentals, strategies, and evidence of its benefits”; and “The essential elements in planning the creation of new nursing leadership”. The planning of leadership succession in nursing can help both training institutions and health organizations to develop the skills and competencies of nurses so they can take over management positions. This planning must consider the history and perspective of young people and those of people who have more experience so that the care provided achieves greater quality. This study encourages nursing leaders, nurses, professors and undergraduate students to learn succession planning as a strategy to ensure achievements in the profession and help build their future.

Artigo teo?rico cujo objetivo foi apresentar uma reflexa?o sobre planejamento de sucessa?o de lideranc?as em enfermagem, destacando bases conceituais e desafios para a formac?a?o de novas lideranc?as no contexto acade?mico e nas instituic?o?es de sau?de. Para tal, foram organizados dois eixos de discussa?o “A sucessa?o de lideranc?as em enfermagem: fundamentos, estrate?gias e evide?ncias de seus benefi?cios” e os “Elementos essenciais no planejamento para formac?a?o de novas lideranc?as em enfermagem”. O planejamento de sucessa?o de lideranc?as em enfermagem pode auxiliar instituic?o?es formadoras e organizac?o?es de sau?de no desenvolvimento de compete?ncias dos enfermeiros para assumirem cargos de gesta?o. Para isso, valoriza a histo?ria e a perspectiva dos jovens e dos mais experientes em busca de melhor qualidade da assiste?ncia prestada. Esse estudo instiga lideranc?as de enfermagem, enfermeiros, docentes e estudantes de enfermagem a conhecerem o planejamento de sucessa?o como uma estrate?gia para garantir conquistas da profissa?o e construir o seu futuro.
