The construction of the feminine and masculine in the process of taking care of children in day-care centers

Resumo: In this study, which has a qualitative approach and is based on Pierre Bourdieu's conception of habitus, was aimed to investigate how the feminine and masculine genders are built in the process of taking care of children in a day-care center located in Rio Grande/RS. After submittion and approval of the project by the Ethics Committee, the data were collected during the months March and April from 2006 by observation registered in a field diary, as well as photographs and interviews with caretakers. The content analysis showed that these people are affectionate and solicitous with both girls and boys. They believe that children care is an instinctively feminine attribute, and that men need apprenticeship for this. Observations and photographs showed up that, apparently or not, gender stereotypes are fixed in children's minds, and that care process is constantly permeated by them. Key words: Child care; Gender identity; Child Education; Community health nursing.  En este estudio, con abordaje cualitativo, fundamentado en la concepción de habitus del sociólogo Pierre Bourdieu, tuvo por objetivo investigar como se construye el género femenino y masculino en el proceso de cuidar niños en una guardería de Río Grande/RS. Después de la aprobación del proyecto por el comité de ética, se colectó los datos durante los meses de marzo y abril de 2006, por medio de observación registrada en diario de campo, fotografías y entrevistas con las cuidadoras. Por el análisis de contenido, se aprendió que ellas son afectuosas y solícitas tanto con niños cuanto con niñas. Se cree que el cuidado de niños es atribución instintivamente femenina y que los hombres, al querer desempeñarla, necesitan aprendizaje. Se evidenció, por las secciones de observación y fotográficas que de forma ora evidente, ora velada, los estereotipos de género son inculcados en los niños  y el proceso de cuidar es constantemente por ellos influenciado. Pela análise de conteúdo, apreendeu-se que elas são afetuosas e solícitas tanto com meninos quanto com meninas. Acreditam que o cuidado de crianças é atribuição instintivamente feminina e que homens, ao quererem desempenhá-la, necessitam de aprendizado. Evidenciou-se, pelas seções observacionais e fotografias que, de forma ora evidente, ora velada, os estereótipos de gênero são inculcados nas crianças e que o processo de cuidar é constantemente por eles permeado.
