BEHAVIOR OF BASIS AND ANALYSIS OF RISK BASIS IN THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF BEEF CATTLE IN THE STATE OF GOIÁS, BRAZIL

Resumo: The objective of this paper was to measure and analyze beef cattle basis values and basis risk for the State of Goiás, Brazil. The Goiás State Federation of Agriculture and Livestock (Faeg) series of spot prices for beef cattle and the series of future prices in the Brazilian Mercantile & Futures Exchange (BM&F), from the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea), at the “Luiz de Queiroz” College of Agriculture (ESALQ) of the University of São Paulo, were used in the study. The mensuration of the basis and of the basis risk allowed the analysis of the behavior of the beef cattle spot prices for the State of Goiás and the future prices of the commodity in the BM&F. It was noticed a significant difference between the series, during the researched period. That difference of prices is more evident between December and May, period defined as harvest. However, between harvest periods, from June to November, prices present a closer proximity. It was concluded that the statistical parameters used are essential for producers decision making in the commercialization of beef cattle in the State of Goiás. O trabalho teve por objetivo mensurar e analisar os valores da base e do risco de base da arroba do boi gordo, para o Estado de Goiás. Utilizou-se, no estudo, a série de preços da arroba do boi gordo para o Estado de Goiás, obtida junto à Federação da Agricultura e Pecuária do Estado de Goiás (Faeg), e a série de preços futuros na Bolsa de Mercadorias & Futuros (BM&F), obtida junto ao Centro de Estudos Avançados em Economia Aplicada (Cepea) da Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ), da Universidade de São Paulo. A mensuração da base e do risco de base permitiu analisar o comportamento dos preços da arroba do boi gordo, à vista, para o Estado de Goiás, e os preços futuros da commodity, na BM&F. Notou-se uma significativa diferença entre esses, durante o período pesquisado. Essa diferença de preços é mais evidente entre os meses de dezembro e maio, período definido como safra. Entretanto, no período de entressafra, que vai de junho a novembro, os preços apresentam uma maior proximidade. Concluiu-se que os parâmetros estatísticos utilizados são essenciais para as tomadas de decisão, por parte dos produtores, na comercialização do boi gordo, no Estado de Goiás.
