Popularity and visibility in digital networks: negotiation of social capital in digital media aiming at audience expansion

Resumo: This study aims to contribute to the understanding of the factors that promote popularity and visibility of certain online posts. Based on a video posted on YouTube that reached almost 5 million hits, this research indicates reasons which may explain the popularity and the visibility – social capital categories proposed by Recuero (2009) – of the video analyzed and its impact in the social circulation of the netizen investigated. These questions are relevant to think about new possibilities for the citizen participation of people in symbolically peripheral positions.

Basado en un vídeo, publicado en YouTube, que recibió casi 5 millones de visitas, la investigación indica factores que pueden explicar la popularidad y visibilidad – capital social propuesto por Recuero (2009) –del video investigado y su impacto en el ámbito de circulación social de la internauta investigada. Estas preguntas son relevantes para entender las nuevas posibilidades de participación en la sociedad de individuos simbólicamente periféricos.O presente estudo propõe uma análise dos fatores que promovem a visibilidade e popularidade de determinadas postagens online. Com base em um vídeo, postado no YouTube, que obteve cerca de 5 milhões de visualizações, a pesqui­sa indica fatores que podem explicar a popularidade e a visibilidade – capitais sociais propostos por Recuero (2009) – do vídeo analisado e o seu impacto no âmbito da circulação social da internauta investigada.
