The constructs of ‘intelligibility’ and ‘comprehensibility’ in the analysis of brazilian portuguese data as an aditional language: a complex dynamic system perspective

Resumo: This paper discusses the constructs of L2 speech ‘intelligibility’ and ‘comprehensibility’ (MUNRO; DERWING, 2015), associates these constructs to the theory of Language as Complex Dynamic System and proposes modifications in the measurement of these constructs by investigating intelligibility in the oral productions of Haitians, learners of Portuguese as L2, judged by Brazilians. The study investigated 57 Brazilian participants, who were divided into 3 groups (monolinguals, L2 leaners of French and L2 learners of English). Three measurement possibilities were tested: percentage of correct words after an oral repetition task, Likert Scale and decision time. Our results have shown a complex relationship among the three measurements, verified through different responses in each group.

Our results have shown a complex relationship among the three measurements, verified through different responses in each group.Este trabajo analiza los constructos de ‘inteligibilidad’ y ‘comprensibilidad’ (MUNRO; DERWING, 2015) a la luz de la concepción de Lengua como Sistema Dinámico Complejo, y propone ajustes para medir la inteligibilidad de hablantes haitianos, alumnos de portugués como idioma adicional, por brasileños. Se contó con 57 participantes brasileños, divididos en 3 grupos (monolingües, estudiantes de francés y estudiantes de inglés). Se implementaron tres diferentes modos de medición: porcentaje de palabras correctas, Escala de Likert y tiempo de toma de decisión. Entre los resultados, se verifica una relación compleja entre los modos de medición testeados, comprobados a través de las diferentes respuestas de cada grupo.Este trabalho problematiza os construtos de “inteligibilidade” e “compreensibilidade” (MUNRO, DERWING, 2015), aproxima-os à concepção de Língua como Sistema Dinâmico Complexo, e propõe adaptações na mensuração da inteligibilidade de haitianos, aprendizes de Português como Língua Adicional (LA), por brasileiros. Contamos com 57 participantes brasileiros, divididos em três grupos (monolíngues, aprendizes de francês e aprendizes de inglês). Foram testados três diferentes modos de mensuração: percentual de palavras corretas, Escala de Likert e tempo de tomada de decisão.
