Mapping of flooding risk areas in the city of Uba, Minas Gerais

The process of urbanization of the city of Ubá, Minas Gerais, was conditioned by the topography of “undulating terrain”. The occupation of the city began at the valley floor, at the floodplain of the Ubá River. That without the preservation of it’s shores and suffering by many intervention exposed the city to the vulnerability to extreme events of precipitation, that trigger urban flood. The focus of this study is to map the areas that are more susceptible to these events. With this purpose, a multi-criteria model was built, with three information layers: altitude, declivity and land use and occupation. The mapping results were confronted with flood data obtained by the Civil Defense, and by the region news articles. The conclusion is that, although the model has its limitations, it is a functional tool to identify the risk of these kind of events, that enable the government to intervene in critical areas and regulate future urban developments.
