Resumo: | This paper starts analyzing the first act of the comedy Hecyra (The-mother-in-law) of the Roman poet Terence. Initially, I observe the speech and actions of the characters, examining how they introduce a central theme to the play, i.e. the conflict between sexes, as well as the composition of female characters. In my analysis, the first act is considered as a moment in which the fiction is established within the repertoire of typical situations and characters of the Roman New Comedy. Thereafter female stereotypes and misogyny observed in the first scenes shall be compared with subsequent passages of the play, in which female roles are also thematized. |
