Resumo: Premature infants are at high risk for the development of hemorrhagic or ischemic cerebral injury, which contributes significantly to neonatal mortality as well as long term neurodevelopmental deficits. Peri and intraventricular hemorrhage is the most common lesion in the mildest form, it is confined to the germinal matrix; in more severe cases, it is complicated by bleeding into the periventricular white matter. By means of a descriptive study, an investigation was carried out to assess the incidence of intraventricular hemorrhage in the neonatal intensive care unit of Albert Sabin hospital in the city of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais state, from February 1993 to September 2003. Within this period, all cases of peri and intraventricular hemorrhage occurred in the neonatal intensive care unit of Albert Sabin hospital were studied. Data from 331 files were analysed with respect a gestacional age, lower birth weight (Lactentes prematuros são de alto risco para o desenvolvimento de agressão cerebral isquêmica ou hemorrágica, o que contribui significativamente para mortalidade neonatal bem como para déficit no desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor. A hemorragia peri e intraventricular é a lesão mais comum, na sua forma mais branda, sendo confinada à matriz germinativa; em casos mais severos, é complicada pelo sangramento para dentro da substância branca adjacente. Por meio de um estudo descritivo, uma investigação foi efetuada para conhecer a incidência de hemorragia peri e intraventricular na Unidade de cuidados intensivos neonatais do Hospital Albert Sabin, na cidade de Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, de fevereiro de 1993 a setembro de 2003. Dados de 331 prontuários de recém nascidos com peso < 2.500g foram descritos em relação a: idade gestacional, intubação, síndrome do estresse respiratório (doença de membrana hialina), sepsis neonatal, ductus arteriosus patentis, transfusões sangüíneas e ventilação mecânica.
