Teaching with Pedagogical Letters: Paulo Freire’s legacy and experience of reinvention in higher education

Resumo: The article aims to propose the dialogue about the theoretical-methodological potential glimpsed in the expression Pedagogical Letter, minted by Paulo Freire. The expression is inviting for the redimensioning of banking practices of written production, fostering a fruitful articulation between teaching, research and extension actions. The text presents a brief bibliographical study about Pedagogical Letters in Paulo Freire’s work. Afterwards, it shares the teachers’ experience of making classes in higher education, followed by the analysis of a Pedagogical Letter sample produced by the author herself in different contexts of written communication with the students. This study results in the comprehension of the theoretical-methodological potential of the Pedagogical Letters in terms of promoting permanent (trans)formation processes in the perspective of teachers and student’s authorial production. The final considerations invite to a dialogue about the currentness of this understanding and its contributions to practices in remote learning contexts.

Se comprende que la expresión es atractiva para redimensionar prácticas bancarias, fomentando la fecunda articulación entre acciones de enseñanza, investigación y extensión. El texto presenta un breve estudio bibliográfico sobre las Cartas Pedagógicas en la obra de Paulo Freire. A continuación, comparte la experiencia docente de hacer la clase en la enseñanza universitaria, seguida por el análisis de una muestra de Cartas Pedagógicas producida por la autora, en diferentes contextos de comunicación escrita con los estudiantes. Resulta de este estudio la comprensión acerca del potencial teórico-metodológico de las Cartas Pedagógicas en cuánto a promocionar procesos de (trans)formación permanente en la perspectiva de la producción con autoría de profesores, profesoras y estudiantes. Las consideraciones finales invitan a dialogar sobre la actualidad de esta compresión y de sus contribuciones para las prácticas en contextos de enseñanza remota.      O artigo tem o objetivo de propor o diálogo sobre o potencial teórico-metodológico vislumbrado na expressão Carta Pedagógica, cunhada por Paulo Freire. Compreende-se que a expressão é convidativa para o redimensionamento de práticas bancárias de produção escrita, fomentando a fecunda articulação entre ações de ensino, pesquisa e extensão. O texto apresenta um breve estudo bibliográfico sobre as Cartas Pedagógicas na obra de Paulo Freire. A seguir, compartilha a experiência docente de fazer a aula no ensino superior, seguida da análise de uma amostra de Cartas Pedagógicas produzidas pela própria autora, em diferentes contextos de comunicação escrita com as e os estudantes. Resulta deste estudo a compreensão acerca do potencial teórico-metodológico das Cartas Pedagógicas quanto a promover processos de (trans)formação permanente na perspectiva da produção autoral de professoras/es e estudantes.
