Styles and dimensions of leadership behavior in health care chief nurses

Resumo: | INTRODUCTION: the nurse's leadership behavior is essential to guide healthcare in the institutions. OBJECTIVE: to outline the profile of the chief nurse, trying to identify his individual and professional features; to identify, according to self-perception, the management style of the nurse by analyzing his performance and the dimensions of his leadership behavior during daily work, during nursing supervision and in hospital units. METHODS: it is a descriptive and quantitative study, developed in order to test an instrument based on the Grid theory, which was applied to 11 nurses from public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro-Brazil, in 2007. RESULTS: most nurses were middle aged, with no children who received 11 salaries and carried out 6 to 10 years of leadership. As to the styles considering the dimension of the leadership behavior, it was evident the predominance of Team Management (34 options) followed by organization man management (19 options). CONCLUSION: except the paternal style, which was not observed in this study, these results are similar to those found in the scientific literature. |

Los objetivos del presente trabajo fueron delinear el perfil del enfermero líder identificando sus características individuales y profesionales; identificar el estilo de gestión del enfermero analizando el ejercicio de las dimensiones de su liderazgo, en su trabajo cotidiano de coordinación, jefe de unidades de internación y supervisión de enfermería, según su autopercepción. Investigación descriptiva, cuantitativa, desarrollada en 2007 para probar un instrumento basado en la Teoría Grid Gerencial en 11 enfermeros de un hospital público de Rio de Janeiro-Brasil. Los resultados indicaron que predominaban enfermeras de media edad, sin hijos, con 11 sueldos, que ejercían el liderazgo entre 6 y 10 años. En cuanto a los estilos considerando las dimensiones del comportamiento de liderazgo, se constató predominio de la gestión de equipo (34 opciones), seguida de la gestión hombre organizacional (19). Se concluyó que estos resultados son similares a los hallados en la literatura, a excepción del estilo paternalista, no percibido por las enfermeras de este estudio.A liderança do enfermeiro é fundamental para orientar o cuidar em instituições de saúde. Assim, tem-se como objetivos nesta pesquisa: delinear o perfil do enfermeiro líder, identificando suas características individuais e profissionais; e identificar o estilo gerencial do enfermeiro, analisando o exercício das dimensões de sua liderança no cotidiano do trabalho de coordenação, na chefia de unidades de internação e supervisão de enfermagem, segundo sua autopercepção. Esta é uma pesquisa descritiva, quantitativa e implementada, visando testar instrumento baseado na Teoria Grid Gerencial em 11 enfermeiros de hospital público do Rio de Janeiro, em 2007. Como resultado, observou-se que predominam enfermeiras de idade média, sem filhos, com 11 salários, exercendo liderança de 6 a 10 anos. Quanto aos estilos, considerando as dimensões do comportamento de liderança, constatou-se a predominância (34 opções) da gerência de equipe, seguindo-se (19) a gerência homem organizacional.
