Perioperatory care of the orthopaedic patient from the nursing team perspective

Resumo: Qualitative and descriptive study aimed to reveal the meaning of the orthopaedic patients' perioperative care developed by the nursing staff of a university hospital. Data was collected through recorded semi-structured interviews totalling 15 respondents, six nurses and nine nursing technicians. The analysis was supported in the procedures adopted by Martins and Bicudo and enabled the development of four thematic categories: 1) orthopaedic patient caring needs; 2) orthopaedic patient care; 3) meaning of care, 4) the self-care practiced by nursing staff. The results demonstrated appreciation of individual needs of patients at a biological, psychological, social, and spiritual level. Respondents reflected on the meaning of the polysemic word "care" through silence and doubt, and expressed meanings such as zeal, attention, concern and offering help to others. They considered the importance of self-care in their own lives for they believe it is necessary to know how to care for themselves first before caring for others.

La recogida de datos fue realizada por medio de entrevistas semiestructuradas grabadas, totalizando 15 entrevistados: seis enfermeros y nueve técnicos de enfermería. El análisis siguió los procedimientos de Martins y Bicudo lo cual permitió establecer cuatro categorías temáticas: 1) Necesidades de cuidado del paciente ortopédico; 2) Cuidado del paciente ortopédico; 3) Significado del cuidado y 4) Autocuidado practicado por el equipo de enfermería. Las entrevistas revelaron el valor de las necesidades individuales de los pacientes a nivel biológico, psicológico, social y espiritual. Los entrevistados reflexionaron sobre el significado polisémico de la palabra "cuidado", con silencio y dudas, y expresaron significados como interés, atención, preocupación y ofrecimiento de ayuda al otro. Además, consideraron la importancia del auto cuidado pues piensan que primero hay que cuidarse para después cuidar a los demás.Estudo qualitativo-descritivo cujo objetivo foi revelar o significado do cuidado perioperatório para a equipe de enfermagem desenvolvida com pacientes ortopédicos de um hospital universitário. A coleta de dados foi por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas, gravadas, totalizando 15 entrevistados, 6 enfermeiros e 9 técnicos de enfermagem. A análise apoiou-se nos procedimentos adotados por Martins e Bicudo, o que possibilitou a formulação de quatro categorias temáticas: 1. Necessidades de cuidado do paciente ortopédico; 2. Cuidado ao paciente ortopédico; 3. Significado do cuidado; e 4. Autocuidado praticado pela equipe de enfermagem. Os resultados demonstraram a valorização das necessidades individuais dos pacientes, nos âmbitos biológico, psicológico, social e espiritual. Os entrevistados refletiram sobre o significado polissêmico da palavra "cuidado", por meio do silêncio e dúvidas, e expressaram significados como zelo, atenção, preocupação e oferecimento de ajuda ao outro.
