The role of doulas assisting women in labor

Resumo: This is a descriptive study which seeks to define the profile and role of doulas. It was carried out in the Santa Marcelina Itaim Paulista Hospital with 9 doulas. The results showed: age between 26 and 71 years, 7 had at least one child. We found that doulas provide emotional support, physical comfort and guidance to delivery mothers, showing commitment to the mothers. The activity is recent in Brazil and has not been defined. This could provide greater care for women during pregnancy and not only at the time of delivery. They could work, for example, during puerperium and during breastfeeding.

Los resultados muestran: edad entre 26 - 71 años, 7 tenían por lo menos un hijo. Los datos indican que las doulas ofrecen ayuda emocional, bienestar físico y orientaciones a la parturienta lo cual demuestra compromiso con dichas parturientas. La actividad de la doula es reciente en Brasil, aun no está definida: podría dedicarse a atender a la mujer en un periodo mayor del embarazo como, por ejemplo, durante el puerperio y el proceso de amamantación.Estudo descritivo com objetivo de caracterizar o perfil das doulas e sua função. Realizado no Hospital Santa Marcelina Itaim Paulista com nove doulas. Os resultados mostraram: idade entre 26 - 71 anos, 7 tinham pelo menos um filho. Os dados apontaram que as doulas ofereceram apoio emocional, conforto físico e orientações à parturiente, demonstrando comprometimento com as parturientes assistidas.
