It's a living being: Substitution, adaptation and standardization of music instruments between Africa, Europe and Brazil

Resumo: Music instruments are generally investigated from a Eurocentric point of view that, based on physical and visible aspects, observes them as fixed and standardized objects and compares them to canonic instruments mainly from European concert music. Having as main object of study the viola machete of samba de roda, this article crosses historical and iconographic records of the presence of African instruments in Brazil with data collected with sambadores and viola luthiers in the field, in order to deconstruct the supposed European origin of instruments and practices of popular music in Brazil. I seek to demonstrate how music instruments are not mere fixed objects that were immutably transfered from one culture to another, but that, like the "living beings" that constitute their materials, are constantly adapted to different contexts, being often replaced and re-signified within the musical practice.

Teniendo como tema principal la investigación de la viola machete de la samba de roda, este artículo cruza registros históricos e iconográficos de la presencia de instrumentos africanos en Brasil y datos recogidos en el campo con sambadores y luthiers de viola, deconstruyendo la ideología del origen europeo de los instrumentos y las prácticas de la música popular en Brasil. Pretendo demostrar cómo los instrumentos musicales no son meros objetos fijos sujetos a una transferencia inmutable de una cultura a otra, sino que, al igual que los "seres vivos" que constituyen sus materiales de construcción en los contextos tradicionales, se adaptan constantemente a diferentes contextos, siendo a menudo sustituidos y resignificados en función de la práctica musical.Instrumentos musicais são geralmente pesquisados sob uma ótica eurocêntrica, que os observa enquanto objetos fixos e padronizados, a partir de aspectos físicos sobretudo visíveis, e os compara a instrumentos tidos como padrão oriundos sobretudo da música de concerto europeia. Tendo como mote principal a investigação da viola machete do samba de roda, este artigo cruza registros históricos e iconográficos da presença de instrumentos africanos no Brasil e dados coletados em campo com sambadores e luthiers de viola, desconstruindo a ideologia da origem europeia de instrumentos e práticas da música popular no Brasil.
