Composing aleatoric music through interaction: a composition environment based on interaction with mobile technologies for public spaces

Resumo: | Urban public art is an art exhibition held in public places, contextualized with their surroundings and its audience. Technology is a significant trend in public art due to its connection possibilities with human life, fostering different kinds of interaction. In this way, this work presents an installation proposal consisting of an environment for creating collaborative random music from interaction with mobile devices in public spaces. Everyone participating in the installation is a composer and interaction is a chance agent, although it follows John Cage's composition methods. In order to probe technology, we carried out two pilot studies, followed by a workshop for the installation itself. Those two pilot studies led us to a new version that was put into practice during the workshop. During the workshop, participants' interaction generated fourteen compositions, and the sounds resulting from the collaborative composition were made available to the public through a website. |

La tecnología es una tendencia significativa en el arte público por sus posibilidades de conexión con la vida humana, fomentando diferentes formas de interacción. Así, este trabajo presenta una propuesta de instalación que consiste en un entorno para la creación de música aleatoria colaborativa a partir de la interacción con dispositivos móviles en espacios públicos. Todos los participantes en la instalación son compositores y la interacción es un agente de azar, aunque sigue los métodos de composición de John Cage. Para sondear la tecnología, realizamos dos estudios piloto, seguidos de un taller para la propia instalación. Estos dos estudios piloto nos llevaron a una nueva versión que se puso en práctica durante el taller. Durante el taller, la interacción de los participantes generó catorce composiciones, y los sonidos resultantes de la composición colaborativa se pusieron a disposición del público a través de un sitio web.Arte pública urbana é uma exposição de arte realizada em locais públicos, contextualizada com seu entorno e seu público. A tecnologia é uma tendência significativa na arte pública por suas possibilidades de conexão com a vida humana, fomentando diferentes formas de interação. Desta forma, este trabalho apresenta uma proposta de instalação que consiste em um ambiente para criação de música aleatória colaborativa a partir da interação com dispositivos móveis em espaços públicos. Todos os participantes da instalação são compositores e a interação é um agente do acaso, embora siga os métodos de composição de John Cage. A fim de sondar a tecnologia, realizamos dois estudos-piloto, seguidos de um workshop para a própria instalação. Esses dois estudos-piloto nos levaram a uma nova versão que foi colocada em prática durante o workshop.
