Hans-Joachim Koellreutter and South American Music at the Internacional Summer Courses of New Music in Darmstadt (1949-1951)

Resumo: The International Summer Courses of New Music in Darmstadt constituted one of the most important centers for contemporary music after World War II. Since their beginnings in 1946, some Latin American composers participated in the courses. This article embraces the presence of South American music between 1949 and 1951, relating to the participation of German composer and flutist Hans-Joachim Koellreutter, who set in Brazil in 1937. Koellreutter played an interesting role in Darmstadt in his double condition as agent of the German musical culture in Brazil and as exponent of South American music in Germany. The article explores Koellreutter’s own speeches about Brazilian and South American music, the performance of some Brazilian works and his participation in the International Dodecaphonic Congresses. These experiences have contributed to strengthen his identification with twelve-tone music, and this local projection as the initiator of dodecaphonic music in Brazil.

Desde sus inicios en 1946, algunos compositores latinoamericanos han participado de ellos. Este artículo explora la presencia de la música sudamericana entre 1949 y 1951, a través de la participación del compositor y flautista alemán Hans-Joachim Koellreutter. Radicado desde 1937 en Brasil, Koellreutter actuó como mediador en su doble condición de portador de la cultura musical alemana en Brasil y de representante de la nueva música sudamericana en Alemania. El trabajo abarca las diversas instancias en las que Koellreutter participó en Darmstadt; entre ellas, dictando charlas sobre música brasilera y sudamericana, gestionando la interpretación de obras brasileras y siendo miembro de los Congresos Internacionales de Dodecafonía. Estas experiencias fortalecieron su identificación con la música dodecafónica y su propia proyección como introductor de la dodecafonía en Brasil.Os Cursos Internacionais de Verão em Darmstadt foram um dos centros mais importantes da música contemporânea internacional após a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Desde sua criação, em 1946, alguns compositores latino-americanos têm participado deles. Este artigo explora a presença da música sul-americana entre 1949 e 1951, através da participação do compositor e flautista alemão Hans-Joachim Koellreutter. Sediado no Brasil desde 1937, Koellreutter atuou como mediador em sua dupla capacidade como portador da cultura musical alemã no Brasil e como representante da nova música sul-americana na Alemanha. O trabalho abrange as várias instâncias em que Koellreutter participou em Darmstadt; entre elas, palestras sobre música brasileira e sul-americana, arranjos de apresentação de obras brasileiras e ser membro dos Congressos Internacionais de Dodecafonia.
