Resumo: The observation of students’ music making through the modalities of composing, audience-listening and performance, enables us to illuminate the nature of the relationship between musical understanding and skills. It is suggested that the manifestation of the optimal level of musical understanding depends on the refinement of the skills to accomplish a particular task. The results confirm this hypothesis, revealing the extent to which instrumental performance may become less appropriate an indicator of students’ musical understanding due to the complexityinvolved in this modality. A follow-up study is being conducted focusing on the implications of the repertoire over musical development.
