EFFECT OF RELATIVE AGE ON SCHOOL HANDBALL IN THE STATE OF MATO GROSSO: AN ANALYSIS OF CATEGORY A STUDENT-ATHLETES

Resumo: The Relative Age Effect (RAE) is the age difference between athletes of the same category that causes a disadvantage to those born in the last months of the year when compared to those born in the first months. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the existence of RAE in handball student-athletes of both sexes, who competed in the 2021 Mato Grosso Games. The sample consisted of 237 student-athletes from category A (15 to 17 years old), 97 females and 140 males, who participated in the School Games and Student Games of Mato Grosso National Teams in 2021. Significance analyses by quartile were performed using the chi-square (x²) and Bonferroni correction. The analytical result of the student-athletes' dates of birth indicated a greater proportion of those born in the second quarter compared to those born in the fourth quarter of the year. It is concluded that RAE was present in male handball, but not in female handball.

Por lo tanto, el objetivo del presente estudio fue investigar la existencia del EIR en estudiantes-atletas de balonmano de ambos sexos que participaron en los Juegos de Mato Grosso (Brazil) en 2021. La muestra constó de 237 estudiantes-atletas de la categoría A (15 a 17 años), 97 femeninos y 140 masculinos, que participaron en los Juegos Escolares y Juegos Estudiantiles de Selecciones del estado de Mato Grosso (Brazil) en 2021. Los análisis de significancia por cuartil se realizaron mediante el chi-cuadrado (x²) y la corrección de Bonferroni. El resultado analítico de las fechas de nacimiento de los estudiantes-atletas indicó una mayor proporción de nacimientos en el segundo trimestre en comparación con el cuarto trimestre del año. Se concluye que el EIR está presente en el balonmano masculino, pero no en el femenino.O Efeito da Idade Relativa (EIR) trata-se da diferença etária entre atletas da mesma categoria que ocasiona desvantagem daqueles nascidos nos últimos meses do ano quando comparados aos nascidos nos primeiros meses. Desta forma, o objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar a existência do EIR em estudantes-atletas de handebol de ambos os sexos, que disputaram os Jogos Mato-grossenses de 2021. A amostra foi composta por 237 estudantes-atletas da categoria A (15 a 17 anos), sendo 97 femininos e 140 masculinos, que participaram dos Jogos Escolares e Jogos Estudantis de Seleções Mato-grossenses em 2021. As análises de significância por quartil foram realizadas através do qui-quadrado (x²) e correção de Bonferroni. O resultado analítico das datas de nascimento dos estudantes-atletas indicou uma maior proporção aos nascidos no segundo trimestre em comparação aos nascidos no quarto trimestre do ano.
