Resumo: For the child, the processes of learning and development take place according to the experiences lived, the family members' incentives, the school environment, the friendship cycle, and the relationship between the “I” and the world. In this study, we seek to investigate the educational play (free and functional) as a framework for action in the children's training process. We opted for qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research, based on the assumptions of the Bioecological Insertion of Human Development. Sixteen children participated in the research, enrolled in an early childhood education institution aged between 4 and 5 years. Field diaries were used to record observations. The analyzes showed that children's engagement in the educational play develops training potential and, as they are immersed in a learning environment, it provides the development of the symbolic function, which refers to the mimetic aspects of reproducing/creating protagonists, solving and expanding unpalatable emotional issues to realistic coping.
