Consumo de Mídias e Juventudes: Usos e repertórios midiáticos dos jovens sul-mato-grossenses

Resumo: ABSTRACT The production, consumption and circulation models of mass media have undergone various transformations, especially in recent decades. In addition to socio-cultural and economic changes, alterations in the patterns of supply and access to these media in contemporary societies have also been influenced by the digitalization of information and the use of the internet as a means of communication. In this context, this research aims to analyze media consumption among youth, focusing on the study of media repertoires of youth aged 16 to 24, from Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Emphasis was placed on the uses and how individuals consume and appropriate various media products and technologies, considering the selective exposure to the media. The general objective was to examine how the media practices and preferences of young people are related to their daily routines and perceptions of usage. It is assumed that the audience selects and organizes media products and content according to their resources and those available in their social environment, based on their expectations and daily practices. The research adopted a mixed methods methodology, combining quantitative and qualitative data into a single study. The quantitative stage (T1) involved the analysis of 2,207 questionnaires administered in 2019, in both public and private high schools and universities in Campo Grande (MS). The qualitative stage (T2) consisted of five focus group interviews conducted in 2022, involving 41 participants from the same age group. The results identified the smartphone/mobile phone as the central device in the communicative practices of the young participants. The analysis of usage perceptions also revealed the centrality of expressions such as adaptability, flexibility, and versatility in the media choices of young people. The participants' understanding that media can be used adaptably and flexibly to perform multiple roles in their daily lives supports the assumption presented by the research. It is concluded that the concept of media repertoires proved to be important for analyzing the relationship between media consumption and youth, serving as a starting point for understanding how perceptions and motivations for media usage are expressed in the media repertoires of young people. Além das mudanças socioculturais e econômicas, as alterações nos padrões de oferta e acesso a essas mídias nas sociedades contemporâneas também foram influenciadas pela digitalização da informação e pelo uso da internet como meio de comunicação. Nesse contexto, esta pesquisa tem por objeto a análise do consumo midiático na juventude, a partir do estudo dos repertórios midiáticos de jovens sul-mato-grossenses de 16 a 24 anos de idade. A ênfase foi dada aos usos e à maneira como os indivíduos consomem e se apropriam dos diversos produtos e tecnologias de mídia, a partir da exposição seletiva aos meios. O objetivo geral foi verificar como as práticas e as preferências midiáticas dos jovens estão relacionadas às suas rotinas cotidianas e percepções de uso. Pressupõe-se que a audiência selecione e organize os produtos e os conteúdos de mídia de acordo com seus recursos e com aqueles dispostos em seu meio social, a partir de suas expectativas e práticas cotidianas. A metodologia adotada pela pesquisa foi a de métodos mistos, utilizada para reunir dados quantitativos e qualitativos em um único objeto de estudo. A etapa quantitativa (T1) foi realizada a partir da análise de 2.207 questionários aplicados em 2019, nas instituições de ensino de níveis médio e superior, da rede pública e privada de Campo Grande (MS). A etapa qualitativa (T2), por sua vez, foi realizada a partir de cinco entrevistas por grupos focais, realizadas em 2022, com 41 participantes dessa mesma faixa etária. Os resultados identificaram o smartphone/celular como o dispositivo central nas práticas comunicativas dos jovens participantes. A análise das percepções de uso também revelou a centralidade de expressões como adaptabilidade, flexibilidade e versatilidade nas escolhas midiáticas dos jovens. O entendimento dos participantes de que as mídias podem ser utilizadas de maneira adaptável e flexível para desempenhar múltiplos papéis em suas cotidianidades corrobora o pressuposto apresentado pela pesquisa. Conclui-se que a proposta dos repertórios midiáticos se revelou importante para a análise da relação entre consumo de mídias e juventudes, apresentando-se como ponto de partida para entender como as percepções e as motivações para os usos das mídias são expressas nos repertórios midiáticos das juventudes.
