Resumo: The present work intends to present and explain about the education and schooling within prisons. Issues such as female incarceration, the punitive and / or resocializing character of penitentiaries, and education as a means of reintegrating persons deprived of liberty into society were addressed. Through the relevant legislation and using a qualitative methodology, it was found that the number of students incarcerated is small, that the number of people who do not have schooling is very high among people incarcerated, especially if this number is compared to that of people who enjoy their right to freedom. Encouraging schooling is a very important role for the State and society, so that the prisoner has dignity in having freedom back, so that society also benefits from having in his womb an ex-prisoner who has self-esteem, respectability and integrity, do not commit crimes again and be prepared to live in a social group.

Foram abordados aspectos tais como o encarceramento feminino, o caráter punitivo e/ou ressocializador das penitenciárias, bem como a educação como meio de reinserção das pessoas privadas de liberdade à sociedade. Por meio da legislação pertinente e com uso de metodologia qualitativa, constatou-se que o número de estudantes presos é ínfimo, que o número de pessoas que não possuem escolaridade é muito alto entre as pessoas encarceradas, principalmente se esse número é comparado ao de pessoas iletradas que gozam do seu direito de liberdade.
