O desabrochar do cuidado : a vivência de cuidadores frente à dependência adquirida do familiar

The number of people with physical disabilities has increased significantly in our country, which requires that health services and socio-cultural context to be prepared to receive such demand. When someone acquires some kind of disability and becomes dependent, care is not only performed in a hospital setting, but for a certain time or even a lifetime, this individual will need a home support. Faced with an acquired dependency, family caregivers arise without previous preparation, unexpectedly and suddenly they start to take care of the patient. Knowing the difficulties found in the care and adaptation of the family caregiver is fundamental for the nursing team in order to promote an effective care geared to the needs of each caregiver. Thus, the objective of this research was to analyze the adaptation process of the caregiver font of the need of caring a relative who became dependent due to neurological damage. For that matter, a qualitative research was carried out with descriptive and exploratory approach, in which we recruited eight family caregivers in the Rehabilitation Unit (UDR) of Alta Floresta, State of Mato Grosso. The data collection was done through interviews recorded in audio, after the authorization and consent of the participant. The interviews were performed in the participant's house, in a quiet room, individually and away from the individual care, leaving the caregiver more secure and comfortable for the interview. The semi-structured questionnaire approached questions about the experiences as family caregiver, the difficulties, problems, support found in the day to day, the perspectives, feelings and the confrontation when this person became a domiciliary caregiver. The data were transcribed and analyzed using the thematic content analysis technique, which gave rise to eight categories: Care under the gaze of the caregiver; Emotional dependence in family caregivers; Religiosity and spirituality as a tool facing the new challenge; Between feeling and reason: is caring always an act of love?; Emotional overload, social isolation and impact on the family caregiver's quality of life; The impact of the new living condition and the acceptance process; Technical difficulties found in care and professional support network. In our results family caregivers have shown to be emotionally dependent on patients, with no prospect of not caring them, and that spirituality is a strong tool for facing this situation. Care for caregivers is a mixture of noble and imposed feelings, in the development of complex techniques that demand dedication and commitment in the execution. The quality of life of these caregivers was altered, presenting overload and social isolation. All demonstrated initial difficulty with the acceptance of the new reality and believe in something superior that explains such a situation. Regarding to care techniques, there was an unpreparedness and lack of professional support. To conclude, the lack of preparation and training of these caregivers, insecurity, fear and difficulties, as well as a multiprofessional support network that could provide the wellbeing of the dependent and the family caregiver were noted.
