Resumo: The prevalence of stress and other psychological disorders has increased in the general population following the Covid-19 pandemic. During this period, healthcare professionals, particularly nursing staff, were directly affected, experiencing physical and mental well-being challenges due to pandemic-related workload burdens. This study aimed to identify factors associated with depressive symptoms among nursing professionals working in a 24-hour Emergency Care Unit (UPA-24h). This was a crosssectional quantitative study conducted with healthcare professionals working at the UPA-24h in thick bush interior, from November 2021 to January 2022. Data collection was performed using electronic (Google Forms) and face-to-face methods, utilizing a semi-structured questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory for self-assessment of depressive symptoms. Data analysis involved storing results in Microsoft Excel 2013 spreadsheets and subsequently using the BioEstat statistical program, version 5.0, with Fisher's exact test to assess associations (considering p<0.05 as significant). The research was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Mato Grosso in Barra do Garças/MT, with ethical approval nº. 4,526,452. The study included 26 healthcare professionals, mostly female (81%), aged 30-39 years (42%), selfidentified as mixed-race (54%), single (50%), with tertiary education (74%). Predominantly, nurses (62%) were surveyed, with <2 years of experience in UPA-24h (50%), and mostly hired staff (96%). Depressive symptoms were present in 38% of workers, notably with moderate and severe levels (15% each). Among professionals exhibiting depressive symptoms (n=10), 70% were nurses and 30% were nursing technicians. Depression was also prevalent among professionals working >40 hours per week (60%) and those considering quitting their jobs during the pandemic (30%), despite being satisfied with their work at UPA-24h (90%). Professionals with depression were distinguished by their history of Covid-19 (60%) and fear of Covid-19 infection at work (70%), transmitting it to family members (100%), and even dying from complications of the disease (70%). The results underscore the need for management/services to invest in strategies focused on prevention and promotion of mental health among healthcare professionals. Moreover, UPA-24h management needs to develop strategies to provide employees with alternatives to improve their mental health, such as encouraging physical exercise, offering psychological support, and providing integrative and complementary practices.
