Resumo: Introduction: Medicinal plants have been widely used by society in the treatment and prevention of various diseases, however without knowledge of the benefits or possible harm, and the population persists in the belief that plant products do not cause damage to the organism. Strychnos pseudoquina, is widely used in popular medicine and is used for various therapeutic purposes, however there are still no studies in the literature on its effects during pregnancy. Objective: To evaluate during the pregnancy of rats, repercussions of the aqueous extract of S. pseudoquina in relation to maternal toxicity and reproductive performance. Materials and methods: Wistar rats (male and female) were used, which after mating and pregnancy were confirmed, were randomly assigned to four experimental groups (n minimum = 11 rats / group): Control - rats treated with water; Treaty 75, Treaty 150 and Treaty 300 - Treated with plant extract in the doses of 75 mg / kg, 150 mg / kg and 300 mg / kg, respectively. The treatment with the aqueous extract was orally (gavage), during the entire pregnancy. On the 21st day of pregnancy, the rats were anesthetized and laparotomy was performed. Then the heart, liver, spleen and kidneys were removed and weighed. After removal of the uterus, implantation points, resorption (embryonic death) and numbers of live and dead fetuses were observed and counted. The ovaries were removed for observation and counting of corpus luteum. Results: The treatment with S. pseudoquina at a dose of 75mg / Kg caused an increase in water intake and food consumption. The Treated 150 group showed an increase in water and food intake, in the percentage of pre-implantation loss and a decrease in the number of corpus luteum. The treated 300 group showed a decrease in water intake, food consumption, relative liver mass, maternal weight gain, weight of the pregnant uterus, number of live and implanted fetuses. Increase in relative kidney mass, resorption, percentage of pre-implantation and postimplantation loss. Conclusion: The administration of aqueous extract of S. pseudoquine, at a dose of 300 mg / kg, in pregnant Wistar rats induces maternal toxicity, in addition to increasing embryonic losses. Therefore, treatment during pregnancy with this plant can be harmful, depending on the dose used.
